It is a joyous day for a high school athlete when they can sign a letter of Intent to play sports at the college level. It was no different for Owen Behrens as he penned his name to a document on Thursday that will extend his baseball career with Kankakee Junior College in Kankakee, Illinois.
The senior will pitch, but has the tools to play other positions as well. His parents Randy and Jennifer Behrens looked on along with former Panther baseball coach Jason Orman and new head coach Mike Hart as he signed his letter in the PHS gym.
While Behrens had a strong hope of playing at the next level, nothing was guaranteed and actually took a turn for the worse last season when he injured his left shoulder during an at bat. The injury slowed him down for the rest of the season and he under went surgery in late spring. His rehabilitation has been successful and he's almost back to 100%. Behrens hopes to get back on the basketball court for the Prophets after the first of the year. He qualified for the final round of the three point shooting competition at the IHSA state basketball finals last March.
Kankakee is the current NJCAA Division II National Champion.
