During the monthly Tampico Area Historical Society meeting President Duane Thompson presented a $2,500 check from the Monsanto "America's Farmers Grow Your Communities" to the society. The program helps more than 1,300 farmers direct over $3 million to rural non-profit organizations across the country. Thompson was selected as the 2018 Whiteside County winner.
Through the" America’s Farmers Grow Communities Program", sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, farmers can enroll for a chance to direct a $2,500 donation to a local eligible nonprofit organization.These funds are used to provide support to a variety of rural nonprofit organizations that reflect the makeup and character of their local communities, including food banks, emergency response organizations, youth agriculture programs, and many others. Eligible farmers must farm a minimum of 250 acres in the county in which they live. Applicants are randomly selected from each county. Gold Star FS is the sponsor of the program in Whiteside County Thompson also won this award in 2012 and named the TAHS as the recipient .
