Winning a national championship is not much of a topic for athletes from Prophetstown High School or the EP co-op, but a PHS graduate will get that chance, a week from Thursday. Jensyn McKinney, a 2016 graduate and member of the PHS volleyball team, will travel with the Sauk Valley Lady Skyhawks to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Finals in Charleston, West Virginia. The Skyhawks will enjoy their fourth straight trip to the tournament after placing 6th last year.
Skyhawk head coach Jay Howell said of McKinney,"She's been an invaluable player for us the past two years. Jensyn is equally effective from either pin, and she has provided instant offense for us whenever called upon. Jensyn had 7 kills and hit .273 in last weekend's regional tournament, and we look forward to her continued production and leadership at the national tournament in West Virginia."
The team earned it fourth trip to the finals after winning the Region IV District A Title last week. The team will take its 32-8 record and 5th seed to the tournament in hopes of winning a first ever national title. 4 of the 16 teams in the finals are Illinois schools with Parkland CC getting the second seed with a 42-1 record. They defeated the Skyhawks in the three close sets on October 27th.
