The Lumberjack Show returns Saturday, October 3rd at Selmi’s Greenhouse and Family Farm, with three shows scheduled throughout the day at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. The event is a partnership between Selmi’s Greenhouse and Rock Falls Tourism and marks the sixth year of the Lumberjack Show at Selmi’s.
Visitors can expect plenty of action as professional lumberjacks from Lumberjack Enterprises out of Minnesota demonstrate traditional lumberjack skills. The performances feature events such as log cutting, axe throwing, log rolling, pole climbing, and water log competitions. The lumberjacks also bring plenty of entertainment and personality to the performances while showing off skills associated with the traditional lumberjack profession.
The day also includes an interactive kids camp at 1:30 p.m., where children can try log rolling on the water. The activity gives kids an opportunity to get involved in the action and is expected to provide plenty of excitement for families.
Another returning attraction is the women’s skillet throwing contest at 2 p.m. The competition debuted the previous year and quickly became a popular part of the event. Participants throw a specially made skillet underhand, with measurements recorded to determine the longest throws.
After several cast-iron skillets broke during the inaugural competition, organizers had a custom skillet made specifically for the event. The new skillet is designed to withstand the competition, giving participants a more durable target to work with.
The skillet competition currently has 11 participants signed up, although organizers noted that registration may be limited. Women interested in participating are encouraged to contact Selmi’s to sign up in advance. Awards will be presented for the top finishers, including a trophy for the longest throw.
In addition to the Lumberjack Show activities, Selmi’s offers a full lineup of fall attractions for families throughout the season. Visitors can see animals in the petting zoo, including Waldo the donkey, and enjoy hot cider donuts on weekends. Food is also available on weekends.
Families can explore the children’s play areas, which include a bounce pillow, giant slide, tumbling wheels, small rides, bounce houses, and corn pits. Selmi’s also features a corn maze designed around a 250-year theme this year, incorporating imagery such as eagles and the Statue of Liberty.
Hayrides are another part of the fall experience, and the seasonal attractions are scheduled to continue through October 30th.
Selmi’s is also beginning its apple-picking season, with U-pick apples starting the week of the Lumberjack Show. A new sunflower patch and zinnia patch provide additional opportunities for visitors to explore the farm and take photos while enjoying the fall scenery.
Admission to the Lumberjack Show and its related activities is included with regular admission to Selmi’s. Admission is $9 per person, giving visitors access to the Lumberjack Show performances, kids’ interactive camp and skillet throwing contest, along with the other attractions available at Selmi’s.
The Lumberjack Show takes place Saturday, October 3rd from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Selmi’s Greenhouse and Family Farm. The lumberjack performances are scheduled for 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m., with the women’s skillet throwing contest at 2 p.m. Other fall activities are available throughout the day.
For families looking for a day of fall activities, outdoor entertainment, and hands-on fun, the Lumberjack Show offers a chance to experience something a little different while enjoying everything Selmi’s has to offer during the fall season.
