Panthers All Advance At Sectional22:59 PM February 08, 2019
The Byron wrestling sectional is by far the toughest in Illinois in class 1A. The field includes perennial powers Dakota, Lena-Winslow, and new comers Aurora Christian are currently ranked as the top three teams in the state. When you add in a few TRAC teams like EP and Orion you have the cream of the crop all battling each other to advance as many wrestlers as possible to the state finals in Champaign next weekend.
After the first two rounds of action on Friday the Panthers still have all five of their sectional qualifiers in the hunt for a state berth. Cameron Abell,120#, went 1 and 1 with an opening 12-6 win over Hartran of West Carroll. He lost his second match 15-2 to Orosco of Aurora Christian. He will now head into the wrestle-back portion of the bracket hoping to get to the third place match.
160# Mat Garrison also split his first two matches getting an opening win 13-6 over Rowman of Somonauk before falling 10-3 to undefeated Harmston of Lena-Winslow. He will also have to fight his way back in hopes of getting into the bronze medal match.
Calvin Naftzger has made it to the semi-finals with a pair of wins. He pinned Mitchell of Ottawa Marquette in 1:11 and beat McMahon of Harvest Christian 17-1. He will be joined in the semi-finals by EP's 182# Gabe Friedrichsen. The senior earned a first round bye and then won by technical fall 16-1 over Habedank of Rockford Lutheran.
The Panther's big man Trevor Pratt, 285# earned a win in his first match with a fall over Sampson of St. Bede. He lost by fall in the second round as Johanik of Wheaton Academy won in :32.
Action begins again on Saturday morning with a trip to Champaign on the line.
