Panthers Send Two (video)00:00 AM February 10, 2018
The EP wrestling team came away from Oregon on Saturday night feeling as though they could have done better. They qualified two wrestlers for the state finals next weekend, but had a shot at sending four.
Garrett Passmore brought home the only gold for the Panthers as he won the 160# weight class extending his perfect season mark to 48-0. Passmore had a few slight stumbles during two of his matches, but chalked it up to being overly aggressive.
Passmore pinned his Stillman Valley opponent in 1:02 in the semi-final and then totally dominated Jack Setra from Aurora Christian earning a tech fall. 25-10
Mat Garrsion took 2nd in the 170# class earning his first trip to the state finals. He bested Hoffman from Durand 8-5 in the semis before getting waxed in the final by Valentine of Lena-Winslow in a tech fall 15-0.
Junior Gabe Friedrichsen and Sophomore Cameron Abell each needed one more win in the consolation semi-finals to hit the highway next week to Champaign.
At 113# Abell couldn't get past Billy Taylor of Alleman as he lost by fall in the third period. Taylor was ranked 5th in Class 1A with 43 wins. Abell concludes his individual season at 29-18.
Gabe Friedrichsen wrestling at 182# also could not get past his opponent as he lost by fall at 1:38 of the third period. Friedrichsen lost for the second time in two days to Julian Jaimes. The Aurora Christian junior beat Friedrichsen 8-4 on Friday.
Friedrichsen looked good in the match, which was tied at 3 starting the third period. Jaimes was able to get the Panther into a cradle and got the pin. Frierichsen finishes with a 32-13 record.
The season for the Panthers who did not make the state finals is not over. They will now set their sites on the state dual tournament which begins a week from Tuesday in Morrison with the Panthers taking on Princeton.
