When the Erie and Prophetstown Boys' basketball teams met at the seasoning opening Orion Tournament most people assumed it would be the last time the two programs would face each other with the vote on a complete co-op almost certain. The Cardinals demolished the Prophets 67- 49 in that game and two days later a complete between Erie and PLT #3 was approved.
But, in a strange turn of events the two teams met again on Saturday in Mt.Carroll to play the 5th place game of the Route 84 Tournament. The Prophets went 3-1 in pool play with their only loss a two point set back to Fulton, but they were dropped to a third place finish in the pool as the seedlings for the finals came down to free throw percentage. The Cardinals went 2-2 in their pool.
Erie came out firing on all cylinders as they jumped out to 15-9 first quarter lead. The Prophets were able to even things out in the second quarter with the teams heading to the locker room with the Cardinals up 22-16. The Prophets trimmed the lead to 4 after the third quarter and then turned on the jets. The Prophets Brayton Lavine could not be stopped as he took over the game in the fourth quarter dominating the boards and pushing the Prophets into the lead. He finished the night with 26 points going 7 of 9 from the free throw line.
Logan Henrekin added 11 for the Prophets and both Lavine and he were named to the all-tournament team. The Cardinals were led by Josh Hammer with 14 points. Kyle Stover added 13 and Dillin Tegeler chipped in 9. Josh Hammer was also named to the all-tournament team.
Prophet coach Patrick Henrekin said, "I was very pleased with the guys. 4-1 was a good showing, regardless of what place we got."
There is still a chance for the Prophets and Cardinal to meet one more time this season as they are assigned to the same IHSA Regional. But, just in case, the two teams gathered on the floor after the game for a group picture, which may become a collectors item in the future.
Both teams will take the week off as the Prophets will participate in the Eastland Tournament beginning on Wednesday, December 27, taking on Freeport Aquin at 6:00 p.m. The Cardinals will be hosting the annual Warkins Classic taking on Peoria Heights on Wednesday as well at 10:00 a.m.
