Erie Firefighter Jodie Wells Completes 2,200 Stair Climb in Honor of 9/11 Victims

By Sarah Ford, Managing Editor

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks of September 11, 2001, Erie firefighter Jodie Wells completed the 2,200 Stair Climb while in full firefighter gear at Planet Fitness in Moline today.

The climb is a memorial event where participants climb 2,200 steps to symbolize the 110 stories of the World Trade Center towers and the grueling ascent faced by the FDNY firefighters. The annual climb honors the sacrifices of the 343 first responders and all lives lost that day. Firefighters, military personnel, and community groups complete the climbs nationwide on 9/11, often wearing heavy gear or weighted vests.

Wells said this was his first year on the stair climber, but he’s done the climb for the past three years at the FDIC International Firefighter Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. The conference was held in April this year, with firefighters completing the climb in the Colts stadium. “So technically, this is my 2nd stair climb this year,” Wells said. The climb takes about an hour to complete. Thank you Firefighter Wells for honoring the lives lost on that tragic day 25 years ago.
