Alpaca farms across the country have been celebrating the 17th annual National Alpaca Farm Days by opening their farms and barns so the public can learn more about the inquisitive and lovable camelids, known for their soft and luxurious fleece.

The farm tours coincide with National Alpaca Day, which is observed on Sept. 26 each year.

Dietricks’ Alpaca Ranch will be open to the public on Saturday, Sept. 30 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Visitors can mingle with a herd of 51 Huacaya alpaca while learning about the alpaca lifestyle, their history, and their fiber. Herd keeper Tracy Livesay says alpacas are gentle, sociable, curious, and quite vocal, often making a humming sound.

Visitors can come by for a tour of the 50-acre farm at 11200 Lomax Rd., Prophetstown to learn more and get up close and personal with the animals. “We hope you can come and meet the gang!” says Tracy.
