Jalapena is approximately 3 to 4 months old and came to Granny Rose after being found living on the streets. When she first arrived, she showed some of the feistiness expected from a kitten without much experience with people. That quickly changed as she became comfortable with human interaction.
Now, Jalapena is described as an affectionate, curious, and adventurous kitten who enjoys climbing shoulders and couches, playing with other kittens, and spending time in people’s laps. She has also become an excellent ambassador for Granny Rose Animal Shelter.
One of Jalapena’s special roles has been visiting nursing homes throughout the Tri-County area. Along with Rosie, a small dog, Jalapena gets the opportunity to interact with residents who may not be able to easily leave their rooms. Her calm and affectionate personality makes her a natural fit for these visits.
Her name also reflects the personality she showed when she first arrived at the shelter. Because she was a little spicy when she came in, the shelter decided that Jalapena was the perfect name.
Granny Rose uses opportunities like shelter visits and community outreach to help cats become comfortable around people. For animals that arrive from the streets, experiences such as being held, sitting in laps, receiving treats, and playing with people can be important parts of their adjustment.
The shelter also takes a careful approach to introducing animals to other pets. Rather than routinely testing cats with dogs, Granny Rose focuses on observing their behavior in a way that minimizes stress. Jalapena has spent some time around Rosie, the shelter’s small dog ambassador, but her behavior around larger dogs is not yet known. Any potential adopter with a dog should plan for slow, appropriate introductions.
Jalapena is currently available for adoption for a $150 adoption fee. She has been spayed and has received her vaccinations, flea and tick treatment, and deworming. She will be due for her rabies vaccination in approximately three weeks.
She is known to do well with other cats and is exceptionally friendly with people. Her compatibility with dogs will depend on the individual dog and how introductions are handled.
Granny Rose Animal Shelter also has several upcoming events designed to support the shelter and the animals in its care.
On October 19th, the shelter plans to host a bingo night at the VFW and Elks Lodge in Dixon. The event will raise money to help support the animals at Granny Rose.
The shelter’s second annual Trunk or Treat is scheduled for October 24th. The free, dog-friendly event will offer families a safe place to celebrate Halloween, with music, food, and candy. Community members can also participate by decorating a vehicle and handing out treats.
The shelter’s largest event of the year will take place on December 5th with the Midnight Masquerade, a black-tie formal gala. The evening will feature live music from Lunchbox Legends, silent auctions, full catering, and a pie bar. Tickets are $75 per person and include the food and entertainment. Guests are also encouraged to embrace the masquerade theme with creative masks and formal attire.
Funds raised through the shelter’s events help Granny Rose continue its work throughout the community, including animal care, nursing home visits, support for the PADS homeless shelter, and efforts to help keep families and pets together.
For people who cannot adopt but still want to support Granny Rose, the shelter offers merchandise, including T-shirts, along with online donations and a wish list. Supporters can contribute without visiting the shelter in person, allowing people from near and far to help the organization.
Jalapena’s story is a reminder of the important role local animal shelters play in giving homeless animals a second chance. A kitten who once had to survive on the streets is now a loving companion who enjoys attention, playtime, and curling up in someone’s lap.
For anyone looking to add a playful and affectionate kitten to their family, Jalapena could be the perfect match.
