Lake Erie Country Club was the host for the first annual Marcia Smith Memorial Tournament on July 21st with nearly thirty high school golfers coming together for the eighteen hole event.

Smith, of Erie, a long time business owner and Village Mayor passed away in April after a lengthy battle with Cancer. In addition to her civic endeavors, the Iowa Hawkeye alum and supporter, coached boys golf and was the first girls basketball coach at Erie High School. Smith also worked as a substitute teacher in the Erie Schools.

The first annual Marcia Smith Memorial Golf Tournament included high school golfers from several area high schools.

“Marcia had a great love for youth golf,” said tournament organizer Kathy Kuhnen. “She did so much for the youth of the Erie community.”

The event was created by Erie High School teacher and EP coach Ryan Winckler. “I just wanted to do something special for Marcia for the twenty-one years she served as golf coach at Erie, and everything that she gave to our community as mayor,” said Winckler.

The field included golfers from area high school programs including EP, Fulton, Kewanee, and Sterling. Winckler said he was amazed at the number of participants and sponsors that made the inaugural event a huge success. “With the sponsors generosity we were able to have pin prizes, give the kids a pulled pork meal for lunch, as well as a goodie bag with golf tees, golf balls, and a special marker in her memory,” added Winckler. “It was a great day, and we look to build on it in the future.”

The organizers hope to keep the event on the third Tuesday of July in the future so participants can add it to their summer schedule early in the season.

Individual prizes were awarded to the top two finishers in four high school grade divisions. Brady Timmerman won the event carding a 75.
