This year’s gathering at Osage Beach, MO continued that tradition, with graduates representing the classes of 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1990. The group also included two sons of graduates and one graduate of Erie High School, adding to the mix of friendships and connections that make Festivus special.
The festivities always center around several favorite pastimes, including golf, good food, gambling and watching games on television. Whether competing on the golf course, trying their luck at the tables or enjoying a meal together, the group found plenty of opportunities for laughter and conversation.
One of the highlights this year was watching the Erie-Prophetstown (EP) versus Riverdale football game. Although the outcome wasn’t what the group had hoped for, the game sparked plenty of memories of football games past. For these former classmates, the action on the field was about more than the final score. It brought back memories of their own school days, the excitement of Friday night football and the friendships formed along the way.
Over the years, Festivus celebrations have been held in a variety of locations, including Prophetstown, the Ozarks, Oklahoma City, St. Louis, Tunica and other destinations. While the scenery may change from year to year, the purpose remains the same: reconnecting with old friends, sharing stories and creating new memories.
That is part of what has kept Festivus going for more than two decades. The gathering offers a chance to step away from everyday routines, catch up with longtime friends and remember the people and experiences that helped shape their lives.
For these Prophetstown High School graduates and their friends, Festivus is more than an annual gathering. It is a tradition like no other and worth keeping.
