Along the Rock: From Community Members to Community Leaders

Hosted by Emma Watts, Article by Sara Bellows

On this episode of Along the Rock, host Emma Watts sat down with Vanessa Wessels and Jessica Cash to discuss the impact of the Sauk Valley Community Leadership Program and celebrate a major milestone for the organization — its 10th graduating class.

The program, developed through a collaboration between local chambers of commerce and Sauk Valley Community College, was designed to strengthen leadership across the Sauk Valley region by connecting individuals from diverse industries and backgrounds. Over the course of nine months, participants meet once or twice each month to explore leadership development, community challenges, and the many organizations that shape the area.

Each session focuses on a different topic and often takes participants directly into the community. From agriculture visits at local farms to discussions surrounding education and workforce challenges, the program introduces participants to the people and industries driving the Sauk Valley forward. The experience is designed not only to educate participants about the region, but also to help them better understand their own leadership abilities.

Vanessa Wessels, a graduate of the program’s 2020 class and current board member, shared how the program has continued to evolve over the years. She described the leadership program as a place where participants discover strengths they may not have previously recognized while building relationships with others who are equally passionate about making a difference in the community.

Jessica Cash, a member of the current class, discussed the transformation she has witnessed throughout the year. Participants come from many different professional backgrounds, including social services, banking, agriculture, education, and business. Through networking and collaboration, they begin to see how their careers and personal goals intersect with the broader needs of the community.

The conversation also highlighted how the Sauk Valley Community Leadership Program mirrors some of the same goals found in local student leadership organizations, including CEO programs that encourage entrepreneurship and professional growth among younger generations. In some sessions, the leadership program even collaborates directly with local CEO students, creating mentorship opportunities and shared learning experiences between emerging and established leaders.

One of the most meaningful parts of the program comes at the end of the year through what organizers call the “Call to Action.” Participants reflect on what they learned throughout the program and outline how they plan to apply those lessons moving forward. According to Wessels and Cash, these reflections often become deeply personal moments that reveal how much participants have grown over the course of the experience.

For many graduates, the impact of the program extends well beyond the final session. Participants often leave with stronger professional networks, greater confidence, and a renewed commitment to community involvement. Wessels explained that many of her own professional opportunities and community involvement experiences can be traced back to her decision to apply for the leadership program years ago.

Applications are currently open for the next Sauk Valley Community Leadership Program class, with selections expected to be finalized by early summer. Scholarship opportunities are also available for those interested in participating.
