Mendota’s leadoff hitter started the contest with a double to left center. EP starting pitcher, Wynn Renkes responded with a strikeout but the Lady Trojans scored on a solid single up the middle to go up 1-0. With two outs an error by shortstop Laken Renkes allowed a second run to score to make it 2-0 Mendota.
In the bottom of the first, Laken Renkes redeemed herself on her first at bat as she singled and was awarded second on defensive interference. A weather delay was called at that point with the contest delayed by 30 minutes. Once play resumed, Renkes stole third and scored on a ground out to make it 2-1. Ava Grawe followed with a double and advanced to third on an error before the game was halted.
Baseball
Panther starting pitcher Alastaire Sweetser got off to a rocky start against the Trojans. Mendota’s leadoff hitter singled, which was followed by a walk. Catcher Sawyer Copeland came through as he cut down a runner trying to steal third on a strikeout and Sweetser struckout the following hitter to end the inning unscathed. EP had their first two hitters reach in the first but did not score.
In the top of the second back-to-back singles got the Trojans on the board to take an early 1-0 lead. The game was suspended during the Panther’s half of the inning with two on and two out with Sweetser at bat. Carter Hadaway and Richard Carreno had each singled in the inning.
The same squads are scheduled to meet in Mendota on Thursday for the second half of their seasonal contests.
