Along the Rock: Run for a Reason – Apple Cider Run Supports Mental Health in the Sauk Valley

Hosted by Nathan Stahr, Article by Sara Bellows

On this episode of Along the Rock, host Nathan Stahr welcomes Nick Pepper from 7:24 Fitness on the Rock and Andrew Jackson from Sinnissippi Centers to talk about the Sauk Valley Apple Cider Run and the impact it has on the community.

Now in its sixth year, the Sauk Valley Apple Cider Run has become an annual event that combines fitness, fall fun, and support for mental health. After beginning virtually during its first year, the event has returned as an in-person race at Selmi’s Greenhouse and Farm Market.

The event features both a 5K and a half marathon, with both races beginning and ending at Selmi’s at 8 a.m. on Saturday, October 10th. The 5K follows an out-and-back route, while the half marathon offers a longer scenic course that travels through the Rock Falls and Sterling areas, along the canal, and through Sinnissippi Park before returning to Selmi’s.

Participants can also enjoy the fall atmosphere at Selmi’s after completing the race. Registration includes admission to Selmi’s for the day, along with an apple cider donut and drink. Early registrants can also receive event merchandise, including a quarter-zip pullover for half marathon participants and a long-sleeve shirt for 5K participants. While registration remains open through race morning, organizers recommend registering at least two weeks before the event to guarantee a shirt.

The registration price is scheduled to increase October 1st. Before the increase, the 5K is $35 and the half marathon is $60. Packet pickup will be available October 9th from 4 to 6 p.m. at 7:24 Fitness on the Rock, with additional pickup available race morning beginning at 7 a.m.

The race also serves as a fundraiser for the CARES Fund at Sinnissippi Centers. The fund provides short-term assistance for clients facing needs that may not be covered through traditional funding sources.

According to Jackson, CARES Fund assistance can help with emergency housing needs, utility expenses, medication copays, employment-related needs, and home or vehicle repairs. These resources can help address immediate problems that can create additional stress and affect a person’s overall mental wellness.

The Sauk Valley Apple Cider Run is also part of the Hope Series, a collection of four races supporting different mental health organizations throughout the area. Participants who complete all four races can receive additional series merchandise.

With 100 percent of the Sauk Valley Apple Cider Run proceeds benefiting the Sinnissippi Centers CARES Fund, the event offers runners and community members an opportunity to support mental health while enjoying a fall day along the Rock River.

Registration and race information are available through the Sauk Valley Apple Cider Run website. Information about Sinnissippi Centers and its services is available at sinnissippi.org.
