Mail submissions to:
Illinois Flag Commission
Howlett Building, Room 476
501 S. Second St.
Springfield, IL 62756
The commission, established in 2023 following the passage of Senate Bill 1818, will choose 10 designs that best represent Illinois’ identity. An online public survey will allow residents to vote on these designs or retain the current flag. Voting begins January 1 and will run for six weeks.
After gathering public input, the commission will present its findings to the Illinois General Assembly, which will decide whether to adopt a new flag.
Contest Guidelines:
- Designs may include natural features, history, or culture of Illinois.
- No restrictions on flag shape or ratio, but the commission may edit submissions.
- Designs should use no more than three colors for clarity.
- Participants may submit up to three designs.
- Designs must be original, not AI-generated, and may not include copyrighted materials, though reproductions of the state seal or previous state flags are allowed.
- Submissions must include personal details and a description of the design.
- File size should be under 5MB, in PNG, GIF, or JPG format.
Designs from outside the U.S. can only be submitted by mail. Designers under 18 must coordinate submissions with an adult. For more information, visit the commission’s website.
