Visitation will be from 9:00 am – 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2026 at Gibson – Bode Funeral Home, Erie. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Erie. Burial will be private in the Erie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Erie Food Pantry or Self Help Enterprises.
Joanne was born April 17, 1932 in Wayland, Missouri, the daughter of Phillip and Marguerite (Schmidt) Filz. She graduated from Wayland High School in 1950. On July 12, 1950 Joanne married Karl Hopson at St. Francis Church in Keokuk, Iowa. They made their home in Erie and Joanne worked several years at Sandstrom Products in Port Byron.
Joanne was a longtime active member of St. Ambrose Church in Erie. She was an avid golfer. She and Karl were members of the Lake Erie Country Club for over 40 years. Joanne is also a past member of the Erie Lioness. She enjoyed reading and loved going to the Lake of the Ozarks. Her favorite food was chicken wings and Chicken George from the Candlelight Inn.
She is survived by her husband Karl of 76 years; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Barb Hopson, Erie; daughter, Becke Medema, Erie; grandchildren Christel, Sean, Chance, Heather, and Lissa; and several great grandchildren.
Joanne was preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Carla and Jerry Martens; son-in-law, Bob Medema; brother-in-law, Seldon Hopson; and her 5 siblings.
