Hamilton is an 8-year-old St. Bernard and doodle mix who arrived at Granny Rose Animal Shelter after his owner entered hospice care. Despite the difficult circumstances that led to his surrender, Hamilton has quickly won over shelter staff with his calm personality, affectionate nature, and easygoing demeanor.
Weighing around 110 pounds, Hamilton is a large dog with an even bigger heart. Dixon explains that while his size can make him strong on a leash, he is a friendly companion who enjoys spending time with people, riding in the car and soaking up attention wherever he goes. During the episode, Hamilton happily demonstrates a few commands, including sit, shake and lie down, showing that he is both well-mannered and eager to earn treats.
Hamilton is currently receiving some extra grooming care after arriving with matted fur, a common issue for dogs with curly coats. Once groomed, he will be even more striking, but prospective adopters should be prepared for regular brushing and maintenance to keep his coat healthy.
Potential adopters should also know that Hamilton does best as the only pet in the home. According to Dixon, he previously lived with other animals, but after recovering from a broken hip and spending time separated from them, he became less comfortable around other pets. He also has food allergies to pork and chicken, so his diet will need to avoid those ingredients.
Because of his size, Hamilton benefits from regular exercise to help maintain a healthy weight and reduce stress on his joints. Staying active can help minimize the risk of hip problems that are common in larger breeds. Even with his exercise needs, Hamilton enjoys relaxing with his people and has a laid-back personality that makes him an easy companion.
Those interested in adopting Hamilton can complete an adoption application through Granny Rose Animal Shelter. The shelter’s adoption process includes checking with landlords when applicable, contacting veterinarians, reviewing animal control records, and arranging meet-and-greets before finalizing an adoption. Hamilton’s $350 adoption fee includes vaccinations and neutering, and he is ready to begin life with a new family.
During the episode, Dixon also shares an update from Granny Rose Animal Shelter, highlighting a recent appearance on a Chicago television news program featuring several adoptable animals. He also provides an update on a blind kitten currently thriving in foster care after surgery to remove both eyes following a severe infection.
