Tornado Confirmed in Hooppole After Friday Morning Storm

By Sarah Ford, AP Staff Writer

Friday morning's line of severe storms spawned a brief tornado in Hooppole, the National Weather Service has confirmed.

The storm, later classified as a derecho due to its duration and wind severity, hit the Prophetstown and Lyndon area around 8:48 a.m. and Tampico around 8:56 a.m. A tornado warning was issued for the area as an impressive shelf cloud darkened the skies.

The NWS confirmed that a video showed a tornado crossing IL-78 and IL-92 northwest of Hooppole around 8:50 a.m. traveling a distance of 0.8 miles. There were no reports of damage and the tornado was rated an EF-U, meaning “unknown strength.”

So far, six tornadoes in the Quad Cities region have been confirmed after the lines of storms, with no major damage or injuries reported, according to local meteorologists.
