The first event will be held Tuesday, August 25th from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Sterling Public Library. Senator Arellano will provide a look back at the spring legislative session and answer questions from residents.
On Monday, August 31st, Senator Arellano will be joined by State Senator Neil Anderson for a second Legislative Session Update at the River Valley District Library in Port Byron. A major focus of the discussion will be the Tyson Foods plant shutdown and its impact on workers, their families, and the surrounding communities. The senators want to hear directly from those affected while discussing what resources and assistance are available.
“The Tyson shutdown is going to have a real impact on a lot of families in this area, and we need to hear directly from the people who are going through it,” Senator Arellano said. “We also want workers to know there are people ready to help and employers looking for good workers. Come out, tell us what you need, and let’s work together on what comes next.”
Several efforts are already underway to help connect displaced Tyson workers with new employment opportunities. The Geneseo Chamber of Commerce and Hammond-Henry Hospital will host a free job fair on Tuesday, August 25th from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Hammond-Henry Hospital in Geneseo.
A Rapid Response Workshop will also be held Wednesday, September 2nd at Vibrant Arena at the Mark, located at 1201 River Drive in Moline. Information sessions on workforce programs, unemployment, health, and retirement will be offered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. A resource fair and career/hiring event will run from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., with local employers offering openings in production, maintenance, construction, transportation, and other fields.
Senator Arellano is also working to organize an additional job fair in the area to help connect affected workers with employers. More information will be announced as details are finalized.
